We offer a beginner, intermediate, and advanced class every Tuesday night at the Absolute Ballroom. Please see our Classes and Dancing page for scheduling information.
Our beginner class is west coast swing 101 at its finest. In this class we take students with no prior west coast swing experience (or dance experience at all) and teach them the basic information they need to get moving on the floor. We start each class by defining one of the 3 basic west coast swing "molds" and teach the basic connection, technique, and footwork needed to accomplish patterns within that mold. After that we teach several patterns that fit within that mold so you can start dancing after only a single lesson!
This class takes the information provided in the beginner class, brushes it up, and adds some flair to it. For this class we assume you have done side passes, sugar pushes, and whips before, but we take time at the beginning of class to clear-up any technical difficulties we see within the group. From there we add our favorite twist, turns, styling, and variations to the patterns we review to create new dimensions in your dancing that are challenging and fun. This class is designed to provide students of all skill levels something new to think about.
This class moves at an accellerated pace and adds a new and challenging layer to the material provided in the intermediate class. We will cover many important topics of west coast swing in great detail including (but not limited to) musical interpretation and phrasing, principles and physics of patterns creation, and tools for styling. This class, like the dance itself, will be a continually changing and evolving environment that will provide you with the newest (and most tried and true) material needed to take an advanced dancer to the next level.
You must be able to competently demonstrate all the fundamental patterns and techniques taught in the intermediate class before attending the advanced class. We will not slow down for people fumbling through basics!
